For the Mother who has Everything – a BRICK!!

Brick Grid at Bidwell-Wood HouseMother’s Day (or any other gift-giving occasion) is always a conundrum: she seems to have everything and need nothing (but your love and devotion of course). But fortunately, the Historical Society of Sarasota County has the perfect solution to your gift-giving problem: a brick!

That’s right! Whether Mom lives in, loves, or simply enjoys visiting Sarasota County, you can commemorate her affection with something that will last for decades, even centuries. And this is no ordinary brick, just like Mom’s no ordinary mother.

How about a historic brick from Sarasota’s Seaboard Airline Railroad!!!

Bricks at Bidwell-Wood House

Nothing says loving like a brick.

The Historical Society of Sarasota County salvaged the bricks from Main Street and Lemon Avenue when the station depot was being demolished.  We have them laid as the walkway into the 1882 Bidwell-Wood House, Sarasota County’s oldest surviving residence, for a lasting memorial.  Each year the new etched bricks are laid on Pioneer Day with a celebration for new brick owners.

You can honor anyone including yourself with an etched historic brick.  A donation of $100 or more creates a permanent reminder of your loved one and participation in Sarasota History.  Each year the new etched bricks are laid with ceremony to honor those who support Sarasota history in the walkway.

To honor your mother in front of this historic home, or to inscribe a brick for yourself, your loved ones, or a special occasion, simply print out this form and mail it in: Brick Reservation Form. Prefer to do it by phone? Call Linda, Site Manager, any weekday between 10 and 2 at 941-364-9076 or email us at hsosc1@gmail.com

Red Hat Ladies Caught Red-Handed at HSOSC

Red Hat Ladies Caught Red-Handed at HSOSC

HSOSC Member Lois Greer brought her Red Hat group to the Historical Society for an outing recently. Docent (and HSOSC Prez) Howard Rosenthal was on hand to greet them as they drove up 12th Street in a bevy of pre-WW1 automobiles driven by Lois’ husband Ed and his fellow old-car enthusiasts.

The ladies were a remarkable group –  11 women, all dressed in purple dresses with red hats (except for the one renegade who opted for a red dress and purple hat!)

Lois and Ed Greer are exceptional volunteers for HSOSC. They donated uncountable hours working on the restoration and painting of the two historic buildings in Pioneer Park since HSOSC moved the buildings to Pioneer Park in 2006. We always count on Lois for assistance as needed, and just try to keep Ed from posing one of his beloved cars for vintage photo ops during our events!

After touring the Bidwell-Wood House the ladies and their chauffeurs followed the music coming from the Crocker Memorial Church, our second historic building. The Sarasota Earlye Musicke Consort happened to be practicing that morning, and director Charlotte Trautwein graciously explained the early music and early recorder instruments to our guests. The group played a selection for the ladies, who then headed out for a luncheon.

If your club or social group is interested in such an outing, please contact our Site Manager Linda Garcia at 941-364-9076 or hsosc@yahoo.com for available dates and reasonable rates. Our Back Porch is perfect for your picnic or refreshments during season, but you’ll have to find your own vintage cars! We also have speakers available for club meetings.

Donation of Dining Room Table!!

Nancy Dunn donates Tiger Oak TableNancy Dunn has made a fabulous donation of a Tiger Oak Pedestal Table with Lion Head and Paw legs for the Bidwell-Wood House dining room. Her company is Estates Sales by Nancy Dunn, LLC and she also generously donated five matching chairs for the dining room and two beautiful red cushioned Victorian chairs for the upstairs hallway.

US FLAG – Half Mast

Half mast flag on a fixed pole at the Historical Society of Sarasota CountyYour Historical Society will be putting our flag at the proper half-mast whenever we have a proclamation to do so. We have purchased the black ribbon to put on our flag to be doing it correctly.

FAQs on flying the US flag at half-mast

How to fly your flag at Half Staff depends on what sort of flag pole you are using

When raising the flag to half staff on a vertical pole, always raise it briskly to the top of the flagpole for a moment before lowering it. When taking it down for the night, raise it to the top of the flagpole again & lower it to the bottom.

With a telescoping flag pole it is acceptable to put the USA flag on the second set of rings instead of the top set. In this case the top set would be left empty.

When the United States flag is flown at half-staff, State & other flags should be removed or flown at half-staff too.

For flags that can’t be lowered, such as those on many homes including our historic Bidwell-Wood House, the American Legion says that attaching a black ribbon or streamer to the top of the flag is an acceptable alternative. The ribbon should be the same width as a stripe on the flag and the same length as the flag.

Volunteer for Clean-Up Day!

Historical Society of Sarasota County volunteers taking a restEvery so often, we get all of our members together for a Clean-Up Day, and we hope you can lend a hand next time.

All sorts of help is needed, from painting to dusting. Working together on a Clean-Up Day is the ideal time to learn what we have planned, to chime in with your thoughts and ideas, and to interact with some really cool folks: your fellow Historical Society members. Even if all you can do that day is pour the lemonade or take pictures, we urge you to come on down!

We scheduled a clean up day for Saturday – September 10, 2011 from 10am until 1pm.  We had a very good turn out of working folks who did lots of furniture moving and rearranging the Bidwell -Wood house to be ready for docent tours.
