I have a question. I went to the Blue Rooster in the Rosemary district for the 1st last night. I heard they were closing their doors on 4/30 and selling the building to a developer. I commented to friends their is no way this building should be torn down. Isn’t this building protected? I believe in progress, but not at the expense of preserving a wonderful building and neighborhood.
Hi Gary, This is a thorny question, and one for which HSoSC has no clout. You’d need to talk to governmental agencies about your concerns… we’re a private nonprofit and haven’t the funds, the volunteers, or the pull to affect any concerns re building, developers, and property rights. But thanks for following us!
This sounds like a politically correct answer. What’s the point of having a Historical Society if you can’t protect the the history of the city. This is a bad look!
Gary, we’d love for you to get involved! Contact our President, Marsha Fottler, and we’ll get right on it… soon’s we save the historic buildings we are already responsible for. We can ALWAYS use a passionate, insprired, and hard-working member/ board director!

Congratulations Ladies ! This is the best, most comprehensive Newsletter we’ve had at the Historical Society in many a year, no… EVER !!! I just spent 1/2 hour reading it from top to bottom, to make sure that I don’t miss any of the upcoming events! So glad that we have more Blue Chairs now, so we can seat a lot of the standees that we entertained last Season! This season’s line up of speakers and events I feel, will bring in even greater crowds! Keep up the great work, we’re on a roll and I’m hoping that the Giving Challenge this coming week will fill our coffers for more exciting projects! Jane Kirschner

David, this sounds like a great project, and we wish you well on it. Alas, however, the Historical Society of Sarasota County is a private nonprofit and not the involved party, and we do not have a Julie on our Board of Directors. Perhaps you are confusing us with the county government arm, the History Center, recently renamed Sarasota County Historical Resources. Their contact info would be on their site at https://www.scgov.net/history/pages/default.aspx
Sorry for the confusion in our names… this dates back to the 1920’s, so you’re not the first to mix our two groups up!
