A wonderful gift from a wonderful member

Our gratitude for Ted’s

legacy gift to the Historical Society is boundless, just as his interests and knowledge were.

By Marsha Fottler, President of the Board of Directors of the Historical Society of Sarasota County:

Ted Cover was a shy, quiet and scholarly man who first became part of HSOSC when he was a participant in a Conversations at The Crocker event which explored how various religions and places of worship evolved in the Sarasota area.

Ted was a church historian and spoke at the Conversation specifically about the establishment and growth of Saint Martha’s Catholic Church. His knowledge about that church and about the Catholic diocese was remarkably detailed and provided an in-depth look at the growth of Sarasota through a different prism.

Ted continued to come to events and was a strong supporting member of our Historical Society. His strength of commitment to our mission eventually resulted in a surprising legacy. For that we honor his memory and are grateful for his monetary gift. Ted was not out spoken but his actions have spoken loudly and his legacy support is very much appreciated.

His faith in history education is a continuing inspiration to our board and to our membership.

  1. Ted was also an early member of the volunteer group that looked after his neighborhood, Lake Sarasota. He started the Neighborhood Patrol, worked with the Sheriff’s office, and helped train volunteers. And he had an amazing recreation of his home town and train in his home. A really good guy.

  2. Marsha, what a lovely tribute to Ted.
